Mini Dental Implants vs. Normal Dental Implants

Did you know that dental implants come in different sizes? And one size might be more suited to your need than another? To help you understand a little more, here’s what you need to know about mini vs. normal dental implants.

Size matters!

Both mini and normal dental implants have the same overall look. However, as you may have guessed from their name, mini dental implants are a smaller version of normal implants.

  • Regular dental implants are usually between 3.4mm and 5.8mm in diameter
  • Mini dental implants are between 1.8mm and 3.0mm in diameter. They are also a maximum of 15mm long.

Their design also differs slightly, with mini dental implants being comprised of a single, one-piece screw with a ball-shaped end that protrudes from the jawbone.

Mini dental implants could allow crowns to be placed immediately

In most cases of regular dental implants, it’s necessary to wait for osseointegration to occur before the crowns can be placed onto the implanted posts. This is the process where the jawbone heals around the implants to anchor them permanently in your mouth. However, in many cases it is possible for mini dental implants to be loaded with crowns immediately following their placement. This means that you can have the gap in your smile filled more quickly.

Mini dental implants don’t require as much healthy jawbone to be present

Since mini dental implants are smaller than regular ones, the amount of bone needed in the jaw to support them is significantly less. This can make mini implants a better option for patients who may have limited healthy bone in their jaw.

Mini dental implants cause less surgical disruption

At half the size of regular implants, mini dental implants are faster and easier to place. Not only does this create less disruption to the jawbone, but it can make your surgery shorter and cause less discomfort. Patients also usually heal more quickly, with fewer risks of complications.

What do mini dental implants and normal-sized dental implants have in common?

As we already know, mini dental implants and normal-sized dental implants share the same main design. However, regardless of the variety that patients choose, they can still enjoy the same great benefits associated with the dental implant technique. These include, but aren’t limited to:

  • Exceptional strength and stability
  • Superior discretion compared to alternatives
  • They continue to stimulate the jawbone to keep it strong and healthy, ensuring maintenance of facial structure rather than the collapse which is often associated with tooth loss and denture wear
  • Both can be used to support single implants, bridges and dentures
  • They are both very long-lasting, and with the right care and attention, mini or regular dental implants could last several decades or more

In addition to sharing the same benefits, the candidacy requirements for mini and regular dental implants are also almost the same. Patients should have:

  • At least one missing tooth
  • Good oral health with no sign of gum disease and no outstanding dental work needed
  • Good overall health with any medical issues such as diabetes well under control
  • A commitment to their long-term oral health, which means twice daily brushing, daily flossing and regular attendance at oral check-up appointments
  • Realistic expectations for the outcome of their treatment

You should also care for your implants in the same way, regardless of which ones you choose. This means brushing and flossing every day, and visiting your dentist for regular check-ups.
